That said, I think the real story here is that Apple is shaking the tree across the whole code base – meaning these performance optimizations and fixes could benefit you even if you’re running on a beat-up older MacBook, too. Even one user in your user base can be critical. Doing artist relations, you may have a film composer with advanced technical needs and a shelf full of Academy Awards. The use case for this kind of processing power is slim, but then, that’s what the ‘pro’ concept is all about. Under the hood, that means support for up to 56 threads, the kind of massive multiprocessing the new Mac Pro can do. (Mojave is seeming stable these days, and it’s summertime, so maybe now is a good time to do a full backup and take the plunge.)įirst up – yes, the banner feature from Apple’s perspective is that the new Logic runs on the new Mac Pro. The new minimum OS requirement is 10.13.16 High Sierra. This release also marks the end of the road for Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra. Apple has been aggressive with its update cadence for Logic for years running now, even with free upgrades, and this version is no exception. And yes, it supports the new ultra-high-end Mac Pro – but there are fixes and performance optimizations for everyone, with or without new machines.ġ0.4.5 looks like the most pro-oriented Logic Pro in a long time. Logic Pro X 10.4.5, seen onstage at WWDC, is now available.

Saying it is better than films like Interstellar that make you question what it means to sacrifice to compromise and to face death as many reviews do. It isn't a MASTERPIECE that redefined anything. Had no character development or personality (everyone is thoroughly unrelatable monotone seemingly flat in brainfunction and just shy of being a fucking emotional wanker going on about how this is their shot at redemption because they've been so horribly awfully terrible),Ĭharacters do completely unreasonable things like fighting with the truck stuck in the mud rather than disconnecting the fucking trailer (Passing back through this area later without problem btw) or carrying the car door even though the guy would have fit through it or entering a fucking tornado filled sandstorm, going back to fight the army, not to mention the most unbelievable bullshit time and again like swinging between trucks or dodging thousands of rounds or pumping womens breastmilk or the wasting of fuel(their currency) to get one person. It has a hipster-esque level of rehashing a concept that worked or were successful elsewhere(in this case road gangs from the other films),Ĭontained the most idiotic lines "I think they're following us" (after a clear chase and them obviously searching and spotlighting for them), The whole movie is literally one prolonged chase scene, Feel free to use the Politics Megathread pinned to the front page. I just noticed that right on the plug, Volume is labeled “1.”, Foundation is labeled “2.” and Tone is labeled “3.”. Step two is a simple one-knob tone control to easily balance the overall sound. Through clever metering I feel confident that this Foundation knob is a simple tilt EQ with the fulcrum set at 2K. Secondly, we are told to set the Foundation, intended to get the low end to your liking. To a degree this is mastering for dummies, but I can opine that the settings are very very good. This has been taken care of for you and both the compression and limiting are mostly invisible to you. Special note: You have no access to attack and release parameters in the built-in compression and limiting. Review: Chandler Limited® Germanium Compressor from Softube This is not at all hard to do, but unfortunately it is wordy to explain. So, you raise or lower the volume to get nice action around the Comp Mix knob, and also to get the Dynamic Range meter into the green, or more likely to avoid moving outside the green zone. The manual strongly recommends you be in the green area, between 6-8 dB, of dynamic range. That is a Dynamic Range meter showing the difference between your peaks and the body of the sound. You can see the gain reduction for the left and right channels surrounding the Comp Mix knob.ĭo not confuse gain reduction with the pretty meter provided top center of the plug. This knob goes from -12 dB to +12 dB, and if this range is not giving you a sweet spot of gain reduction then you need to precede bx_masterdesk with a simple gain plug. As already stated, you are doing this to set the threshold for limiting and compression. Just keep in mind that the frequency ranges I share are my measurements and were not provided by the vendor, Brainworx. The manual does not reveal what frequency ranges the Foundation and Tone Stack affect, but I have very good approximations I can share with you. Adjust the Tone Stack (A set of four fixed bands of EQ)Īs we go through the actual process, I will reveal my measurements of the tone controls which I determined using pink noise and a spectrograph. Set the Foundation (The Foundation is a big knob, really a tilt EQ).ģ. Turn up the Volume knob (consider this setting the threshold for compression and limiting).Ģ. The manual states that it’s easy as 1, 2, 3:ġ. Once I turned off all the plugs in my mastering chain bx_masterdesk showed its true colors. It is very important when trying out any plug that you first turn off anything before of after it that does the same thing. That didn’t work out so well and basically made it sound like bx_masterdesk was doing between little and nothing. My first shot at trying out bx_masterdesk was to put it at the end of an existing mastering chain, like the song was already mastered. The very easy to read manual suggests an order to adjust things and for my own convenience I’m going to follow it here to introduce the main features and I’ll make comments and value judgements as we go through it.īefore we begin, I have to alert you to a mistake I made initially. I currently have several packaged mastering solutions: Ozone 8, Elevate, Lurssen Mastering Console, and now finally the star of today’s show: bx_masterdesk. First you get rid of a little bad and then you add a little good and then bring it up to loudness standards in a compelling way with compression, limiting, EQ, and saturation. You take a hopefully nice mix rendered to a stereo file and make a number of subtle moves to give it polish and sheen. Mastering is supposed to be a subtle art. Well, friend, I’m here to tell you that Doctor Dirk’s Magic Mastering Mixture is here to cure what ails you, and lift you and your mix to masterful heights! Are your songs anemic and wimpy? Do bullies at the beach kick sand on your masters? Have you ever wished you could get the hot bikini girl standing next to the red sports car, just like the big-time music producers? "Space Sweepers," starring Song Joong-ki and Kim Tae-ri, is taking the safe route by premiering on Netflix in 2021.īut a slew of good local films still made it onto screens during this exhausting year. Highly anticipated big budget films like "Seobok," "Mogadishu" and "Hero" have pushed back their releases to next year. Leading multiplex operators raised ticket prices as part of their attempts to survive the pandemic. Shortly after the historic moment, however, the Korean movie industry experienced a drastic pandemic-driven decline, with theaters around the country closing indefinitely and studios moving most of their big releases to 2021. Netflix and other streaming services have seen that expanding their offerings to include foreign language productions has only helped the bottom line and, with it, opened up new opportunities for storytelling and audiences. The year 2020 started off strong for Korean cinema with "Parasite" making history by winning four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director and the International Feature Film category. This resonance, of course, is what matters in attracting a global audience - not whether productions are free of subtitles scrolling across the bottom of the screen. One man in Pakistan was even forced to sell his own kidney to ensure his daughter’s survival. Medical bills continue to be the top cause of bankruptcy in the U.S., while getting treated for Covid-19 can leave you hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Most of all, the story captures the relatable struggle people face to stay financially afloat. There’s a lot to enjoy about the series, including the suspense and the many grim decisions characters are forced to make, leaving us to ask ourselves how far we would go for our loved ones. Gi-Hun and other characters are presented with an opportunity: Play a series of children’s playground games and potentially win billions of South Korean won lose and be fatally “eliminated.” Gi-Hun’s character and others in the series can feel overly melodramatic, making it a struggle to empathize with them early on.ĭon’t get me wrong. We learn that the mother of one of the main characters, Seong Gi-Hun, has no medical insurance and needs lifesaving treatment that the family can’t afford. The first few episodes tediously set the scene for various characters and their struggles with debt. I have to admit that I don’t understand the hype. Falling into the FOMO trap, I tuned into the show a little over a week ago. Just on the video app TikTok, #SquidGame has been used over 22.8 billion times. Lynda and Mike have been blessed with two precious daughters, Patience and Joy. The Randles enjoy the various occasions where they are able to minister together, Mike speaking and Lynda singing. Mike's background growing up on the streets of Kansas City's inner-city and his dramatic conversion experience have given him a powerful voice to youth who find themselves in the same desperation that he knew on the street. In November of 1989, Lynda married Mike Randle of Kansas City, Missouri. And the way characters were always reading the wrong pages of ancient books and raising the dead by accident. And the way a beetle burrowed in through a guy's shoe and traveled through his body, a lump under his flesh, until it could dine on his brain. It sounded vaguely affectionate, in the way that a pit bull growling over a T-bone sounds affectionate, but how can Imhotep focus on rekindling a 3,000-year-old romance when he has 10 plagues to unleash? There's a lot of funny dialogue in the movie, of which my favorite is a line of Evelyn's after she hears a suspicious noise in the museum library: "Abdul? Mohammed? Bob?" I liked the Goldfinger paint job on the priests in ancient Thebes. But the bass on his voice synthesizer was set to "rumble," and so I was not quite sure what he said. This 1999 mummy does indeed mumble something about his feelings for Evelyn, who may be descended from the pharaoh's mistress on her mother's side. The 1932 movie contains no violence to speak of there's hardly any action, indeed, and the chills come through slow realizations (hey, did that mummy move?). None of this has anything to do with the great horror classic "The Mummy" (1932), which starred Boris Karloff in a strangely poignant performance as a long-dead priest who returns to life and falls in love with the modern reincarnation of the woman he died for. In the earlier scenes, Imhotep is a ghastly special-effects creature who seems constituted of decomposed cardboard and lets out a cloud of dust every time Rick slices him. Arnold Vosloo plays Imhotep the mummy in the later scenes, after Imhotep has absorbed the inner organs of enough victims to reconstitute himself. Her brother Jonathan ( John Hannah) is a spoiled rich kid who specializes in the sorts of asides that butlers used to make. Evelyn ( Rachel Weisz) is too clumsy to be much help (in a delightful early scene, she knocks over one bookcase and the domino effect knocks over every single bookcase in the Museum of Antiquities). Also of course the flesh-eating beetles, although I was not certain whether they were a plague or came with the territory.īrendan Fraser plays Rick, a low-rent Indiana Jones who singlehandedly fights his way through a bewildering series of battles. If he is brought back to life, he will "arise a walking disease," we learn, and unleash the 10 proverbial plagues upon Egypt, of which in the course of the movie I counted locusts, fireballs from the sky, rivers running with blood, earthquakes, and flies. There is good reason not to disturb the mummy, named Imhotep. (Sample dialogue: "Are we talking about THE Hamunaptra?") They get into a race with other fortune hunters, who have heard of untold treasure buried beneath the sands, while meanwhile the descendants of the high priests, who have guarded the city for 3,000 years, move against them. In the 1920s, a French foreign legionnaire named Rick meets a librarian named Evelyn, and joins with her and her brother in an unwise quest to find Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead. As his punishment he is "mummified alive," sealed inside a sarcophagus with thousands of flesh-eating beetles (which eat flesh "very slowly," we learn). This is a movie about a man who fooled around with the pharaoh's mistress and lived (and died, and lived again) to regret it.
